Micah Althea

Hello, I am Micah Althea.... Welcome! It is here that you will find a little glimpse of my heart and my mind through my creative works.

From a young age, I have possessed a free spirit, a creative mind, and unique visions. My dreams were where I was the most free, my vision was clearest, and I heard God’s voice the loudest. As I grew I came to the realization that my ability to see, was my gift, a gift given to me as a means to process the world in a way that others may not, as a way for God to speak to and through me. It was through this understanding that I learned the importance of my dreams, and how to bring them to reality. My visions no longer simply existed in my dream state but in my waking moments as well. Art became my portal.

Seeing myself in artists of the past and present along my journey was challenging. They didn’t seem to reflect me or connect with me. However, early on I discovered Frida Kahlo, and to me she was magical. I was mesmerized not only by her art, but who she was as a person. She wasn’t simply an artist, to me, she herself was art. I was captivated by her ability to transform her pain, trauma, love, freedom, passion, and culture into something not only stunning to the eye, but extremely intriguing to the mind as well. To me she represented strength, beauty, creativity, and fearlessness. She taught me that “passion is the bridge that takes you from pain to change”. Like Kahlo once said... I paint “because I need to” and “I paint my own reality”.

In discovering more of my identity, ancestral traumas, culture, and collective strength, I started to dive deeper into my art and its purpose. I started reimagining myself in different places and forms, unpacking and uncovering truths that weren’t evident. I began reopening doors once closed. Reimagining stories misinterpreted and miss told, and reintroducing the faces of my people, erased. I learned that the role of art is not only to convey, but to interrogate, resist, and reinterpret. It pulls you into a world of “strange and familiar, sensory awareness and reflection, uncanny and intimate”.

My style of art, developing and changing along my journey, finds itself rooted somewhere between the realms of surrealism and magical realism. Breaking all expectations, my art acts as a “site of enchantment”, a portal into a world of knowledge and understanding, transformation and contemplation. It reaches past the surface of visibility into the depths of wonder and the unknown. It requires its audience to learn about the world, as if a child, first through observation and internally through one’s own feelings and emotions. My art engages imagination by blurring the lines between truth and fiction, dreams and nightmares, conscious and unconscious; intriguing the mind’s natural desire for curiosity. Propelling the viewer and artist alike, into a childlike essence of being.

I am inspired and supported by my ancestors, and it is their beauty, power, strength, persistence, determination, and creativity that I exemplify, and that radiates through my work.

The goal for the future is to Reveal truths (unknown and forgotten), Reimagine who are, Re- enchant our communities, and Re-Inspire our people. Dream new dreams, and recognize our collective strength... we have the power to rewrite our stories and control our own narrative.

“Any and everything is a wonder when we view the world as art [and] view the art as the world”- Lawrence Kimmel “The Aesthetics of Enchantment” .
